First Grade

Under the Ocean.

To make these pictures students used a crayon resist technique. To begin, students shared ideas about things that they might see if they were scuba diving. Their next step was to sketch the different creatures and things that they wanted to include in their final picture. Students used their sketches to plan their composition. They then drew a crayon picture making sure to apply the crayon heavily so that it would resist the paint. Finally they put a wash of watercolor paint over the whole thing, making their underwater views come alive.

Building with Paper.

First grade students had a great time learning about paper!  They shared infomation that they already knew about paper, we tested its strength, and talked about what we can do with paper to change it.  Students learned that to make paper stand up, it helps to give the paper "feet" by folding over tabs.  They learned how to make accordian folds, and they experimented with twisting and looping paper.  Once they got started students created amazing sculptures using strips of colorful paper.
